They say humans can look like their pets! Well, what is your opinion? Meet mine… Atlas!

I discovered her in late 2023. I had been looking for a little movement companion. I had visited about three shelters before I found this 6-month-old, very scared, on her bed. As I got her attention, she quickly stood up, backed into the farthest corner, and barked loudly. I would have too! Her distinctive eyebrows drew me in, as my past family dog had similar facial features.
She had been found near a freeway, brought in, and even placed once, but was brought back. The previous family claimed she was not good with other dogs. Despite knowing this, I felt a strong connection knowing that we could help each other grow.
The following week, she took her first car ride and quickly threw up after! I realized everything was likely (relatively) new to her. As we explored outside the shelter, she began to recognize me as her safe place. I learned that when we passed anyone or a dog, she tried to move in the opposite direction. I decided to go to places that had fewer people and better smells! Where?? The trails!

I realized she loved to hike, which was absolutely phenomenal! Over the next few months, we built up her trust and confidence in me and herself. Her shyness of other dogs slowly improved, as I worked extra to socialize her in as many situations as possible. I challenged her by prompting uncomfortable situations, and since we had built lots of trust, she accepted curiously. I am sugarcoating, however, all the training and work paid off.

As she got older, one of our favorite everyday places was the dog park. I decided to find out her breeds to understand her needs and abilities best. I was able to better understand her play style and gain insight into her personality. Who knew back in 2023, I had just discovered an electric connection.
The lessons are both sides are ever-growing. I feel so lucky to get to continue to build trust with her! Overcoming obstacles and hard days are much more worthwhile when you have cultivated a meaningful relationship with progress and motivation. You will spot her in many places over this website, as she is the best axploring buddy!

Consider adoption, so many pets need a caring home!
A side note: make sure to evaluate your long-term view, as well as the anticipated breeds to ensure you are able to best provide for them and their needs (even if she/he is cute!).
