You feel a breeze on your ankles; the air must have started. You sigh as your elbow is lightly bumped. Reactively, you pull back into your space, already feeling small. It’s 5:16 in the evening, how could time be passing so slowly? A wafting aroma, all of a sudden hits you, pizza. Mmh, so doughy and cheesy, your stomach rumbles. Oh well, you see, there are two hours remaining. You decide to close your eyes.
Excuse me. Excuse me. Someone is murmuring. Glancing at the time again, only eight minutes had passed. Seeing the cart gives you hope. Sweet or salty, or do I want refreshing? One by one. Finally, it’s almost my turn. The white noise is drowning out the options as I try to make sense of them. The cart wizzes past. My head swivels quickly to the right, straining my neck. When will they return?
Refocusing, a screen pulls my attention forward. Flashes, vivid colors. Excuse me, would you like anything? Oops, I was distracted. Eventually, feeling somewhat refreshed, put my cup down. I close my eyes.
My back slightly slumped, I feel it. Yes, the worst feeling. So light, yet it feels like a personal full-on attack. Fingers crossed it happens once. I’m waiting for the next attack. Oh no, again. I shift around, showing discomfort. Eyes close again. Exhale.
The breeze ever cooling my ankles, arms in my lap, and feet placed entirely on the ground. Ding ding, you hear metal clicking around you. I’m already in mine. It’s been 30 seconds, and already a third attack—post shifting. Breathe, focusing on breathing. Inhale and ex-Okay, what do I do? Turn around or be a silent sufferer.
Guess what, I will lean forward. Solution. Stretching my back feels good, plus now I’m able to see. To my left, the colors are softening from a glow to a muted gray. Yawning, I pick up the phone. Let’s try this again in true slumping fashion, simultaneously clicking on the gears. Stopping mid-click, they said it was paid. No social media for you. Eyes close.
Finally, peace, no more war, it seems. A page turns, low murmurs, a cough, and the collecting of trash items. Pressure slowly builds in your forehead for a second. Tap tap. You nod and prepare to stand up. As you move, you see little feet behind you. Confirmed. Understandable.
Spotlights multiply as the darkness surrounds. Flashes now appear directly in front of you. Only 30 minutes remaining. Eyes open.
In the middle of the announcement, but it’s a good one. Stretching again, refreshed again. I’m ready to go home.
